Starved Rock State Park

2678 East 873 Road, Oglesby, IL 61348

There are two historical instances where a settlement upon this rock has taken siege. Once in 1864, and again in 1722. The legend is loosely based on a reinterpretation of the 1722 siege.

Legend Says...

Odawa (Ottowa) war-chief Pontiac was said to have been murdered by an Illinois Tribe Member during the council meeting in todays Joliet, IL. Seeking revenge, the Odawa and Potawatomi attacked the Illinois village near Starved Rock.

The Illinois fled from their village and took refuge on top of THE ROCK (Starved Rock). Surrounded by enemy tribes, the Illinois were not able to get food or water. It was the entire village that starved to death on this very site.
